Elevated Industrial Office Design: A Warm Modern Workspace in Downtown Durango

Industrial spaces are defined by their hard edges, steel beams, open floor plans, and expansive glass. But without thoughtful layering, these environments can feel cold or overly utilitarian.
In this two-level office located in Durango’s historic downtown district, our goal was to soften the architectural shell while maintaining the integrity of the industrial design. The result is a workspace that feels both refined and inviting, where function meets comfort in a modern, elevated way.
What Defines an Elevated Industrial Office?
At its core, industrial office design celebrates structure, exposed materials, open layouts, and honest construction. But the most successful spaces introduce contrast.
This is where warm modern design comes in.
By layering:
-
Soft textiles
-
Natural materials
-
Sculptural furniture
…you create a space that feels more human, more comfortable, and ultimately more productive.
Designing for Comfort in a Professional Space
The centerpiece of this office is the Harlowe Reclining Sofa by American Leather.
Unlike traditional office seating, which often prioritizes rigidity over comfort, the Harlowe introduces a more residential approach to workspace design. Its tailored, mid-century-inspired profile conceals a smooth reclining mechanism, making it ideal for moments of rest, informal meetings, or “soft work.”
Upholstered in a rich blue tweed, it adds both color and texture, bringing warmth into the otherwise structured environment.
Layering Texture to Soften Industrial Interiors
To further refine the sensory experience, we layered tactile elements throughout the space.
A plush shearling throw and heavy-knit wool pillows introduce a “texture-on-texture” approach that softens the harder architectural features. These small details make a significant impact, transforming a stark office into a space that feels welcoming and lived-in.
This is the key to modern industrial design: balancing contrast without losing cohesion.
The Power of Art in a Workspace
A single, well-placed piece of art can shift the entire energy of a room.
Centered on the wall is Unforeseen Beauty by Molly Supplee, a piece that adds movement, depth, and an emotional layer to the space. In a setting defined by structure and material, artwork introduces a sense of personality and creative expression.
Material Honesty & Functional Design
The Matthes Console Table by Four Hands serves as a grounding element within the space.
Crafted from reclaimed pine with a weathered finish, it embodies the principle of “material honesty”, celebrating natural imperfections and texture. Its presence reinforces the industrial aesthetic while adding warmth and authenticity.
Bringing Elevated Industrial Design Into Your Workspace
Whether you’re designing a commercial office or a home workspace, elevated industrial design is about balance.
Focus on:
-
Raw architectural elements paired with warm textures
-
Functional furniture that prioritizes comfort
-
Thoughtful layering to create depth and interest
The result is a workspace that feels both inspiring and approachable.
This project came together in collaboration with a local Durango business located in the historic downtown district. Through our custom design services at Artesanos Design Collection, we worked closely with the client to create a space that reflects both their professional needs and personal aesthetic.
From selecting key furniture pieces to refining the layout and layering textures, every decision was made with intention, resulting in a workspace that feels elevated, functional, and uniquely theirs.
